Relevant Experience
Since college I have worked almost exclusively in the entertainment industry.
1974- 197???- Employed by the rock band Rush as the band’s guitar technician. This involved
daily maintenance of all the stringed instruments as well as the design and construction of their
instrument rigs. With a band like Rush, the rigs they would use to play through and also record with
were very complex and quite often ground breaking. Rush are known for their intensity as
musicians and their incredible live shows. The question always arises as to how three people on a
stage can put forth such a giant wall of sound. To a large degree, this is where the technicians
come in. Rush were using remote triggering of keyboards and outboard effects devices long before
midi control was introduced in the early 1980’s. It was Rush's technical wizard, the renowned Jack
Secret, that was responsible for making this technology a reality.
1982- 1997
Rejoined Rush as their guitar technician. I was also present during all of Rush’s recording sessions
from that time on. During the recording of Rush, it was my job to make the musicians’ ideas a
reality, technically speaking , This included the preparation of flattened grilled cheese sandwiches,
sweltering tomato soup and the occasional Herb Albert inspired lunches. I am also responsible for
the conception of many of the now standard rulings for the game of "Scoozeball", perhaps the most
famous of which being the "Lerxst Wake Up Call".
1996- Present
During one of Rush’s time off periods, I began working as Tommy Shaw of Styx’s guitar technician. I
did one more world tour with Rush before rejoining Styx permanently in 1999 where I am employed
to this day.
From my first tour with Rush in 1974 until the present, the band would take breaks from their
touring schedule. During these break periods I would subcontract my services to other recording
acts on tour as their guitar technician. Some of the acts I have been employed by during these
times are as follows:
Damn Yankees
Rush
Tesla
Collective Soul
Peter Frampton
Todd Rundgren
Night Ranger
Tom Cochrane
Metallica
Glass Tiger
The Cars
Shaw/Blades
GHS String Corporation Board of Advisors Member
I am a card holding member in of the IATSE Motion Picture Worker’s Union and have worked on
numerous feature films including:
The X-men, starring Halle Barre and Hugh Jackman
The Farm, starring Al Pacino
The Ref, starring Denis Leary
Trapped in Paradise, starring Nicholas Cage and Dana Carvey
Blues Brother’s 2000, starring Dan Aykroyd and John Goodman
In most of these films I was either on the special effects crews, a rigging grip or a gaffer.
On the Blues Brother’s film I was hired as a guitar technician along with my good friend Russ Ryan.
Players whose instruments we were in charge of for the filming were Eric Clapton, BB King, Bo
Diddley, Jeff Baxter, Jimmy Vaughn, and Steve Cropper.
I have also worked on the audio crew for the Rolling Stone’s Mobile recording unit during a time off
period while in England. This job entailed the miking up of the set for the Eric Clapton 14 day show
at London’s Royal Albert Hall which featured Mark Knopfler, Phil Collins, Chris Stainton and, of
course, EC.
In June of 2004 I was hired by my good friend and production manager Tim Rozner as a member of
the guitar crew for the now famous Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival held at the Cotton Bowl
in Dallas Texas. The list of artists on the roster is too large to mention here, however it was my job
to ensure that these performers, many of whom were coming from home to perform and with
nobody to assist them, were taken care of and their instruments were in show ready condition.
Awards
I am the recipient of a total of 32 platinum and gold album awards and 2 Ampex Golden Reel
Awards for my work in the studio with some of the artists listed above.
